the art of disappearance (2019)

The Art of Disappearance (2019) is an experimental body of work whereby McGarry explores what it would be like to disappear. After a frantic and emotionally draining year that saw McGarry quickly move through different geographical locations, the artist found herself longing to vanish entirely. Whilst contemplating the idea, she became more and more familiar and comfortable with the impermanency of both herself and her place. To explore what it would be like to disappear, McGarry used a pinhole camera made from a home-removal box to create blurred self-portraits in and around her current place in Coventry. The eery, unidentifiable images speak of mortality, whilst visually experimenting with the 'art of disappearing'.
