Sense of Self (2018)

Sense of Self (2018) is a participatory body of social activist art, made in collaboration with the artist's good friend Muhammad Usamah. By working together to analyse and respond to Usamah's experiences of racism and islamophobia, the pair created street murals placed around the city of Coventry to initiate social change. Using McGarry's artistic and photographic practice, as well as Usamah's literary and analytical skills, Sense of Self (2018) intends to investigate how stigmas within society surrounding race and religion affect the individuals' 'sense of self'. Hand-annotated portraits intend to evoke emotive responses to encourage empathy, and thus a change in social attitudes towards race, religion, and gender.
