sense of self (2018)

Sense of Self (2018) is a body of social activist and participatory art, made in collaboration with Muhammad Usamah. Using McGarry's photographic practice, in tandem with Usamah's experience, as well as his literary and analytical skills, Sense of Self intends to investigate how racial and religious stigmas affect the victims' self-perception. By reclaiming words from his experience, Usamah co-directs and hand-annotates studio portraits, hoping to evoke emotive and human responses to his encounter with racism and Islamophobia in contemporary Britain. The work is presented as a permanent street exhibition displayed across Coventry city centre, seeking to encourage empathy, and thus provoke change in attitudes towards race and religion.
